David Davila will play Fidel Castro in an upcoming reading of CELIA BUYS A DRESS, a new play by Yani Perez. The play, directed by Joan Kane, stars Tami Dahbura as the famous Cuban crooner Celia Cruz, and Davila as the dictator with whom she goes head to head. The play is presented as part of the In Her Name festival: a weekend of women’s stories at 13th Street Repertory Theatre.
The In Her Name Festival is a weekend of celebration to benefit 13th Street Repertory Theatre in the name of founder Edith O’Hara, who is 100 this year, and to give more exposure to historical women through the 365 Women a Year: A Playwriting Project plays. 365 Women started via the internet asking women playwrights to write short plays – 10 minutes – for each day of the year. It is in the third year of presenting plays by and about women in history. It is about making sure women who were left out of the history books are recognized.
The festival is produced by Susan Merson (Producing Artistic Director of 13th Street Rep) and Shellen Lubin (for 365 Women a Year), and associate producer, Natalie Osborne (of NO Plays). CELIA BUYS A DRESS will be presented as a reading on April 16th at 2:00pm at the 13th Street Repertory Theatre.
